Control

Last night I finally watched Anton Corbijn’s Control, a biopic about Ian Curtis from everybody’s favorite post-punkers Joy Division. Despite the depressing yet beautiful black and white imagery and downright melancholy story, I really thought this movie came across as a real celebration and tribute to Joy Division and the oh so fruitful Manchester music scene. Toby Kebbell (who I believe won a supporting actor award of some sort) as the band’s manger, Rob Gretton, was a definite highlight for me and provided a much needed splash of calming and comedic relief. It was like Corbijn was using Gretton’s role as Joy Division’s manger to, in a way, help manage the audience work its way through the tragedy and turmoil. It’s one of those movies you will probably never watch again but are glad you did.
