BlissBleep

Here’s a nice little piece on Bleep by, as I’ve mentioned before, one of my favorite music writers, Simon Reynolds. The musical genealogist in me has always loved trying to dig up old music (and even genres) that I’ve never heard of before in attempts to better understand a current style that I might be digging at the moment (dubstep or grime for example). Bleep was the British transmutation of Chicago and Detroit house and a precursor to 2step, jungle, drum&bass, dubstep to grime. Most of these tracks came out around 1990, which would have made me 11 at the time…in Clinton, Mississippi. This music might as well have been coming out of stereo speakers on some desolate planet eons away from my tape deck. You (unless you know more than me about Bleep) may recognize a few like LFO and Nightmares on Wax
You will have to scroll down a bit after the jump but there’s also a really nice primer on Grime before the piece on Bleep.

Better know your history. Otherwise, you are NOT pathetically embarrassed to tell your friendsters that you actually like Justice.
